Actually, Rahul Gandhi had allegedly made objectionable remarks on Modi surname during the Lok Sabha election campaign. Due to this, a case of criminal defamation was filed against him by the local BJP MLA Purnesh Modi.
At an election rally in Karnataka’s Kolar, Rahul Gandhi had reportedly said on April 13, “Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, Narendra Modi… how can they all have Modi’s surname? How come all thieves have the same surname as Modi?’

Chief Judicial Magistrate BH Kapadia had issued summons to Rahul Gandhi in May. The court had accepted the complaint made by BJP MLA Purnesh Modi under sections 499 and 500 of the IPC. This section deals with the criminal defamation case. During the hearing held in July, the court exempted Rahul Gandhi from personal appearance.
In the complaint against Rahul Gandhi, Purnesh Modi had said that the Congress leader has defamed the entire Modi community with his remarks.
